Power BI Filters

While creating reports, dashboards, and visuals in Power BI, filters are essential to refine and control the data displayed in it. It is used to focus on specific data points based on conditions.

Types of Filters in Power BI

Power BI offers different types of filters to control the data displayed in reports.

1. Visual-Level Filters

Visual-level filters can be applied to a single visual like a chart, table, or matrix. It is useful for displaying specific data points within a particular visual. These filters can restrict the data shown in any visual without affecting other reports.

2. Page-Level Filters

Page-level filters can be applied to all visuals on a single report page. It ensures that every visual on the page reflects only the filtered data. This filter is ideal for analyzing data subsets on different report pages.

3. Report-Level Filters

In a Power BI report, Report-level filters can be applied to all pages. It is useful for global filters which can be applied throughout the entire report. This ensures consistency across multiple report pages.

4. Drillthrough Filters

Drillthrough filters are used for navigating from one page to another with specific filtered data. It shows more detailed information about any specifics.

Example: In a summary table, clicking on a product to view its detailed sales.

5. Top N Filters

Based on a specific measure, Top N Filters show only the top or bottom N values based on a specific measure. It can be applied in the filter pane under “Top N” filtering.

Example: Showing the Top 5 Products based on sales/customer reviews.

Advanced Filtering Techniques

Power BI offers several advanced filtering methods for more precise data control.

Advanced Filter Pane

To perform basic and advanced filtering based on conditions such as Equals, Contains, Starts with, Ends with, Greater than, Less than, Between. Users can combine multiple filter conditions to refine data further.

Dynamic Filters with DAX

Use DAX to create dynamic filtering conditions.

Example:

Sales_Filter = IF(SUM(Sales[Amount]) > 10000, "High Sales", "Low Sales")

Relative Date Filters

To show recent trends without manually updating filters.

Example: “Last 30 days,” “This Year,” “Previous Quarter.”

Cross-Filtering Between Visuals

Cross-filtering allows one visual to act as a filter for another.

Example: Clicking on a bar in a bar chart can filter related tables and other visuals.

Applying Filters in Power BI

The filters can be applied in Power BI for creating interactive dashboards, reports, and visuals using:

Filter Pane

Filter pane is located on the right-hand side of Power BI. Drag the fields into the filter pane and set conditions based on the requirements.

Slicers

Slicer filters all visuals and allows users to interact and filter data dynamically.

Go to “Format” → “Edit Interactions” and adjust filter connections.

DAX

In DAX, the FILTER() function is used to create calculated tables and measures.

Example:

FilteredSales = FILTER(Sales, Sales[Amount] > 1000)
